GAME OVER is a game in which the player controls “YOU” and aims to reach the summit of Mount Sumeru. “YOU” begins in hell and must, within a limited time before attaining enlightenment, ascend toward Ujōten, the highest realm of the Three Worlds. The game cabinet was crafted by Mizota Butsudan, a traditional Buddhist altar maker based in Kyushu. Adopting the format of a butsudan as a structure for virtually enshrining the soul, the cabinet houses game software designed around the pursuit of enlightenment in the afterlife. On both sides of the cabinet, the kusōzu (Nine Stages of Decay) are depicted, reconstructed using emoji.
「GAME OVER」は、プレイヤーが「YOU」を操作し、須弥山の頂上を目指すゲームである。「YOU」は地獄からスタートし、成仏までの制限時間内に、三界の頂点である有頂天への到達を目指す。ゲーム筐体は、九州の仏具職人である溝田仏具店によって制作された。魂を仮想的に祀るための仏壇というフォーマットを採用し、その内部に、死後の世界における成仏を目的としたゲームソフトウェアをインストールしている。筐体の左右には、絵文字によって再構成された九相図が描かれている。
